Why the date can be off by a day
Tabular calendar vs. moon sighting
This tool uses a fixed arithmetic (tabular) Islamic calendar — the same kind of calculation phones and calendars use as a default. The UAE's official Hijri months begin only when the crescent moon is confirmed sighted, announced by the Moon Sighting Committee. That can shift the start of a month by a day in either direction. For binding religious or legal dates (Ramadan, Eid, contract deadlines), always confirm with the official announcement.

Why two calendars
Where the Hijri date actually matters
The UAE runs its official and commercial business on the Gregorian calendar. Tax deadlines, employment contracts, financial years and government filings are all Gregorian. The Hijri calendar runs alongside it for religious observance and for some legal and personal documents, which is why anyone doing business here ends up needing to move between the two.
The two calendars drift by about eleven days a year
A Hijri year has twelve lunar months and runs roughly 354 days, about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year. That gap is why Ramadan moves earlier each year in Gregorian terms, and it compounds. Over three decades a Hijri date will have travelled through every season. This is also why you cannot convert by adding a fixed offset, and why a converter is genuinely useful rather than a novelty.

The start of a Hijri month in practice depends on the actual sighting of the crescent moon, which local authorities confirm and which can differ by a day from the calculated date, and can differ between countries. For planning purposes the calculated date is fine. For anything where a single day carries legal weight, confirm against the official announcement rather than against any converter, including this one.
