How grace periods work

Timeline after leaving your job

Day 1: Employment ends (resignation or termination)

Your visa status changes to "grace period" — you are technically in the country legally, but no longer employed by that sponsor.
You can stay, look for work, or exit without penalty during the grace window.
Your visa does NOT automatically cancel on your last day — it remains valid during grace.

Days 1–30 (or 60/180 depending on visa type)

Job hunting window: you can interview, accept offers, and start new employment.
Work prohibition: technically, you cannot work during grace — even on a part-time or freelance basis (many people do unofficially, but it violates your visa status).
Banking & services: your UAE ID & banking access remain active during grace; you can use ATMs, pay bills, etc.
Movement: you can exit & re-enter the UAE freely during grace (useful for visa runs or interviews abroad).

Day 31+ (or beyond your grace period)

If you found work: new employer sponsors a new visa (or transfers existing one). Immigration handles the old visa cancellation automatically. No gap, no overstay.
If you're still job hunting: you must either (a) exit the UAE voluntarily before grace ends, or (b) request a visa extension from immigration (rarely granted; you'd need a specific reason like pending employment offer).
If you overstay: visa becomes "violated" — you'll owe fines (~AED 200/day for early overstay, AED 5,000+ penalties if discovered). Overstaying can ban you from re-entry for 1–3 years.

How to cancel your own visa (voluntary exit)

If you choose to leave the UAE before grace ends (or after it, if overstaying), you can initiate a voluntary cancellation:

Visit immigration (GDRFA/ICP) in person or use their online portal (if available in your emirate).
Request visa cancellation — bring your passport and completed form.
Settle outstanding fines (if you overstayed, any visa violation fines must be paid before cancellation).
Exit stamp: immigration stamps your passport "exit & cancel." You can then leave the UAE.
Timeline: usually same-day or within 2–3 working days.
Note: if you have dependents on your visa, their visas are also cancelled — ensure they have exit arrangements too.

What's the difference between a 30-day and 60-day grace period?

The law provides 30 days for most employees; managers and highly skilled workers (Level 1 MOHRE category) often get 60 days. Golden Visa holders get 180. Your employment letter or visa label should indicate your level. If in doubt, ask your previous employer or call immigration.

Can I work during the grace period?

Technically no — your visa is in "grace" status, not active employment. Working (even freelance) violates your visa status and can result in fines or bans. However, many people consult or work unofficially during grace; doing so is your risk. The safest path is to secure new employment before grace ends.

If I find a new job, is there a gap in my visa?

No — your new employer sponsors you, and immigration handles the cancellation of the old visa and issue of the new one. In practice, this can take 1–3 weeks (during which you're technically on grace, then transition to the new visa). You remain legally in the country throughout.

What happens to my dependents' visas if mine is cancelled?

If you are the main sponsor, their visas are also cancelled. They have the same grace period as you to find a new sponsor (e.g., a spouse can apply for their own work visa, or children may stay if the other parent sponsors them). Plan ahead if you have dependents.

What if I resign without finding a new job?

You enter a 30–60 day grace period. Use it to job hunt, interview, or arrange your exit. If you don't find work, you must leave by the grace deadline. Staying beyond that (without a new sponsor or extension) makes you an overstayer.

Can I get a visa extension if I need more time to find a job?

Rarely. Immigration typically denies extensions in grace periods — the grace is meant to give you time to find work or leave, not to extend indefinitely. Some high-level professionals or Golden Visa holders may get consideration, but don't count on it.

What if I overstay my grace period?

You accumulate overstay fines (~AED 200/day in early overstay, scaling up to AED 5,000+ penalties if enforcement catches you at the airport, bank, or a traffic stop). Overstaying can also result in a 1–3 year re-entry ban and potential blacklist. Exit as soon as you know you won't find work.

How do I know my exact grace period end date?

Count from your last working day. If your employer hasn't formally notified immigration, you have the statutory 30 days (60 if applicable). Once your employer reports the separation to GDRFA/ICP, that date is officially recorded — you can call immigration to confirm your exact end date.

Can I voluntarily cancel my visa early?

Yes — visit immigration and request cancellation anytime. Once cancelled, your visa is no longer valid; if you want to return to the UAE, you'd need a new sponsor visa. Voluntary cancellation is clean (no overstay fines) but is permanent for that visa sponsor.

Do fines carry over if I leave and come back later?

Yes — unpaid overstay fines remain on your record. If you overstay and exit without settling fines, re-entry may be blocked or you'll be required to pay on arrival. Always settle fines before leaving if you plan to return.
