UAE visa cancellation rules when you leave your job

Usually 2 to 7 working days for a mainland employee once the employer starts it, and 2 to 10 in a free zone depending on the zone. The labour card is cancelled first, then the residence visa. A self-initiated cancellation at GDRFA or ICP can be same-day. Delays are almost always the employer's paperwork rather than the government step.

The employer is responsible for cancelling both the labour card and the residence visa after employment ends, and cannot lawfully hold your passport or make cancellation conditional on you waiving money you are owed. Once cancelled, immigration rules rather than the Labour Law govern how long you may remain, which is the 30, 60 or 180 day grace period depending on your visa and skill classification.

Your sponsor is the free zone authority rather than MOHRE, so your employer files with the zone (DMCC, JAFZA, RAKEZ, IFZA and so on) instead. Processing can run slightly longer, some zones require you to attend in person to sign, and disputes escalate to the zone authority first. The grace period is set by immigration and is normally the same 30 days.

AED 50 for every day, counted from the day after your grace period ends. The ICP unified the rate across visit, tourist and residence visas on 3 October 2022, and confirmed in July 2024 that it had not changed. Unpaid fines stay on your record and block a new permit, so settle them before you leave. Check your own balance on the ICP fines service rather than trusting a published estimate.

The ICP sets four tiers: 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue residence, 90 days for skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 and property owners, 60 days where the permit was issued with a guarantor or host, and 30 days for everything else. The count runs from the date the cancellation is formally recorded with immigration, not from your last working day, which is why the two dates can be a week or more apart.

It follows the permit, not the job title. A permit issued with a guarantor or host gets 60 days. Skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 and property owners get 90. Golden, Green and Blue residence gets 180, and so do students who have finished studying and family members of UAE citizens. Everything else gets 30. Technically no — your visa is in "grace" status, not active employment. Working (even freelance) violates your visa status and can result in fines or bans. However, many people consult or work unofficially during grace; doing so is your risk. The safest path is to secure new employment before grace ends.

No — your new employer sponsors you, and immigration handles the cancellation of the old visa and issue of the new one. In practice, this can take 1–3 weeks (during which you're technically on grace, then transition to the new visa). You remain legally in the country throughout.

If you are the main sponsor, their visas are also cancelled. They have the same grace period as you to find a new sponsor (e.g., a spouse can apply for their own work visa, or children may stay if the other parent sponsors them). Plan ahead if you have dependents.

Yes — visit immigration and request cancellation anytime. Once cancelled, your visa is no longer valid; if you want to return to the UAE, you'd need a new sponsor visa. Voluntary cancellation is clean (no overstay fines) but is permanent for that visa sponsor.

Yes — unpaid overstay fines remain on your record. If you overstay and exit without settling fines, re-entry may be blocked or you'll be required to pay on arrival. Always settle fines before leaving if you plan to return.
